Understanding Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy (OT) is about supporting people to do the things that matter most in daily life. These occupations look different for everyone. For a child it may be playing, learning, or joining school activities. For an adult it could be cooking, working, managing a household, or engaging socially.

OTs do not just look at diagnoses or challenges. We look at the whole person, their environment, and what they want to achieve. We tailor strategies and supports to help them participate more fully in everyday life.

How OT helps families and individuals

Families and individuals often come to OT when daily routines feel overwhelming or when there are barriers to independence and participation. OT can support independence in daily living skills such as dressing, showering, eating, or managing routines. It can also help with emotional regulation, sensory processing, and coping strategies. OTs can build social and communication skills to connect with others more confidently. They can recommend equipment, assistive technology, or environmental changes to make life safer and more accessible. We also collaborate with parents, caregivers, teachers, employers, and support workers so strategies work in real life and not just on paper.

More than filling out a template

When families hear about OT through the NDIS, they often think of reports such as Functional Capacity Assessments, Home and Living Assessments, or Assistive Technology recommendations. While reports are important, they are not just paperwork to us.

Every report we prepare is based on a clinical reading of the person’s occupational profile. This includes their strengths, challenges, and the way they interact with their world. We combine interviews, observations, and standardised tools with our professional expertise to provide a report that is accurate, respectful, and genuinely useful.

Why this makes a difference

Because of this approach our reports go beyond ticking boxes. They tell the story of the person in a way that reflects who they truly are. They provide clear and justified recommendations that make it easier for the NDIS to understand and approve supports. They highlight risks and unmet needs that might otherwise be overlooked. They help families feel seen, heard, and supported.

Our commitment

At Go Forward OT we believe Occupational Therapy is about empowering people at every stage of life. Whether it is a child taking first steps in independence, a young person navigating school transitions, or an adult seeking to rebuild routines and community participation, our role is to walk alongside you.

We bring clinical expertise, person-centred values, and a neuroaffirming approach to everything we do. Our reports and therapy are not just documents, but tools for real change in everyday life.
